the silent killer by TheMhpe the silent killer by TheMhpe
This piece was done for a contest at the Danish 3D community 3dmaxer.dk with the theme The Silent Killer. I quickly decided that I wanted to do an alternative interpretation of the subject (which sadly meant no cool, dangerous and sneaky ninjas for my part). :)

"the silent killer" focuses on a very silent killer that we all can be very sure will get us someday: Time. It is one of the things in life we can be completely certain of - it will not last forever. The old man in the picture is on the edge of life, reflecting upon his past. Sadly though, not all pass away of natural courses, but most do, and I wanted to show that in this piece.

I worked pretty hard for about a month on this to get it done in time for the deadline. The image is composited, retouched and post-processed upon in Photoshop. Due to the deadline things like subtle hair strands on the old man's head and his sweater had to be painted in afterwards.

Ah, man.

Normally I don't really like 3d work, but this... ah, this seriously kicks the crap out of the rest of it.

Everything from the dull colors to the lighting wins. I didn't even realise this was a DD until after I had looked at it and fav'd it... it's well-deserved.

A fave for you, good sir.

Shadows, expression, and slanting make you just think" silent killer" without even looking at the title.

Good job :)

Wow that is truly beautiful concept!
I literally had to stop and take a look at this its that great!
It reminds me of Edgar Allen Poe for some reason. (probably because I'm writing an essay about him).
Awesome Job!

Very cool piece, not to mention very strong. That is an excellent portrayal of what you can do with 3D not just animation of special effects. It truly is a medium of infinite possibilities.

The old man is awesome, and the background and color scheme really gives you that feeling time has slowed to a crawl as he waits for it to stop completely since that is all he has left to do.

Are his wrinkles mostly modeled geometry or bump map?

This is amazing, man. I fully respect your use of 3D modeling because I have used it myself and I know it isn't easy or fast. Well lit and interesting angle/framing. The thing I like about it, is the way it caught my eye; It looks painterly first and real/photo second. This quality makes it better than both photos and perfectly-realistic 3D renders.
